VMware Storage Analytics
Solution Highlights

With CPU and memory resources tightly managed by VMware and DRS, storage resources are becoming the most important bottlenecks in virtualized environments.
TBDVirtualFabric provides an efficient and action-oriented way to identify and eliminate bottlenecks that result in high latency between a specific VM and a specific datastore.
VMware’s sophisticated methods for allocating resources to workloads and for optimizing resource usage are limited to CPU and memory resources. The result is in almost all cases large improvement potential in the allocation of storage and SAN resources. TBDVirtualFabric supports FibreChannel, iSCSI and NFS storage – both on the storage and on the ESX side.
Benefits

- Elimination of user-visible bottlenecks: Perceived performance is improved by separating workloads with similar usage patterns.
- Improved storage/SAN utilization: With action-oriented methods in place to eliminate bottlenecks storage and SAN resources can work at utilization rates – comparable to the boost to CPU and memory utilization made possible by VMware and DRS.
- Improved CPU utilization: Since wait cycles for storage I/O are eliminated CPU utilization can be further improved.
- More accurate metrics: Unlike conventional utilization measurements that focus on average utilization over longer time periods, TBD bottleneck analytics identfies “Monday morning bottlenecks” that may only last for minutes or seconds but are highly user visible.
Key Functions

- Per VM and datastore latency measurement: Unique measurement capabilities make action-oriented information available to address the number one bottleneck in virtualized environments.
- Per VM storage-side bottleneck analysis: Identifying LUNs or storage mounts that do not have sufficient bandwidth.
- iSCSI, NFS and FibreChannel support: Specific data collection strategies optimize the information available from vCenter and/or hypervisors..
- Per VM server-side bottleneck analysis for HBAs and network interfaces: Individual bottleneck events are made available in action-oriented reports.
- Visibility into vSwitch and NIC-teams: Based on multi-level discovery and visualization physical and virtual entities are mapped to make dependencies visible.
- Customizable bottleneck and warning thresholds Bottleneck and warning thresholds can be customized globally and on a per NIC, HBA, VM and datastore level.
- Timeline Analysis: Unique timeline visualization makes the distribution of bottleneck events visible.
